Sustainability, Polar Resources and Polar Communities

Sustainability, Polar Resources and Polar Communities

Edited by Sarah Sargent

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Climate change brings particular challenges to polar communities and to the use, safeguarding and sustainability of polar resources. These issues can threaten the existence of traditional ways of life, of community-state relationships, and raise questions over the ownership and control of natural resources. This book sets out to provide in-depth consideration of the variety of issues that arise, within the broad framework of sustainability and the legal frameworks that support sustainability at a local, regional and international level.

POSSIBLE TOPICS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

• Ownership and control of natural resources, including surface and sub-surface resources

• Sustainability, the right to development, and self-determination

• Free, prior and informed consent provisions of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the context of indigenous polar communities and resource use

• The impact of Sustainable Development Goals on specific issues

• Food sovereignty for polar communities

• Issues arising in cultural heritage, both intangible and tangible cultural heritage

• Legal dispute resolution mechanisms
