CALL FOR PAPERS

Learning Universal Tangible and Intangible Heritage from Culture and Nature in Medieval Times

Session Organizers:

Mihailo Popović, PhD (Austrian Academy of Sciences)

and Hee Sook Lee-Niinioja, PhD

BACKGROUND

We are pleased to announce a call for papers for our proposed sessions on "Learning Universal Tangible and Intangible Heritage from Culture and Nature in Medieval Times," to be held at the International Medieval Congress (IMC) in Leeds from 7–10 July 2025. These sessions will explore the multifaceted concept of learning within the context of both tangible and intangible heritage during the medieval period, with a focus on Europe and Asia.

The primary objective of these sessions is to investigate where and how learning occurred in the Middle Ages. We seek to examine whether learning was confined to religious and cultural centers—such as churches, monasteries, and temples—or whether the natural environment and landscapes played a significant role in the transmission of knowledge. Furthermore, we aim to interrogate the extent and impact of oral traditions during this period, considering that literacy was limited to a small portion of society. Given the reliance on oral traditions and visual representations, these elements were integral to the learning processes of the time.

These inquiries will be contextualized within a comparative framework, drawing parallels between European and Asian experiences. The sessions are part of the IMC 2025, which will focus on the special thematic strand "Worlds of Learning," and we welcome contributions that bring innovative perspectives and critical insights to this theme.

PARTICIPATION

We invite scholars at all career stages to submit proposals for fifteen-minute papers related to the session theme. We are particularly interested in contributions that offer fresh methodologies or theoretical approaches, facilitating meaningful cross-cultural comparisons.

Please note that presenters will be responsible for securing their own funding for participation, including travel and accommodation expenses. To accommodate those unable to attend in person, we encourage proposals for online presentations.

SUBMISSIONS AND CONTACT

Interested scholars are invited to submit an abstract of approximately 250 words in English, along with a brief CV (including affiliation, career stage, and research interests), by 5 September 2024 to Mihailo Popović at Mihailo.Popovic@oeaw.ac.at.

Paper selections will be finalized by 9 September 2024, and successful candidates will be required to confirm their participation by 15 September 2024.
