ABOUT THE SERIES

Human beings have always marvelled at mysterious phenomena and unknown entities and have tried to assign name and form to them in order to understand them better. In the process of generating a world image containing wonderous things, new monstrous and fantastic beings were conceived. While similar images were sometimes conjured up coincidentally in regions far distant from each other, some can be traced to their sources and diffusion. In numerous cases, images were taken to other areas by means of colonization and combined with or overlapped by indigenous images.

In this series, we investigate representations of wondrous things in various quarters of the globe, from East to West, North to South, and we thereby explore various aspects of migration, borrowing, appropriation and fusion arising from cultural contact, processes which today are less visible in global society where image conformity is becoming more and more conspicuous.
