ABOUT THE SERIES

The 21st century is characterized by two powerful, often seemingly divergent, currents: the rapid advancements in technologies promising aimed at realizing trashumanist ideals, and the urgent global call for comprehensive sustainability. The "Transhumanism and Sustainability" book series offers a critical and timely platform to explore the complex, and often unexamined, intersections between these domains.

Traditionally, transhumanist discourse has centered on the potential of science and technology to augment human capabilities, extend lifespans, and transcend biological limitations. Simultaneously, the sustainability paradigm—encompassing environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic viability—demands careful consideration of resource limits, ecological balance, and justice for current and future generations. This series challenges the notion that these two trajectories must be inherently opposed. Instead, it seeks to foster a rigorous dialogue on whether and how transhumanist ambitions can be aligned with, and even contribute to, the multifaceted goals of a sustainable future.

This interdisciplinary series invites contributions that critically investigate:

• How emerging transhumanist technologies (e.g., in AI, genetics, cognitive enhancement) can be developed and deployed to actively support Sustainable Development Goals—from promoting health and well-being, and ensuring quality education, to fostering sustainable cities, reducing inequalities, and enabling responsible economic growth?

• What are the implications of human enhancement for social justice, equitable access, and human dignity on a global scale? How can we ensure that transhuman futures do not exacerbate existing disparities but rather contribute to poverty reduction, food security, and gender equality?

• What new models of democratic governance, ethical oversight, and institutional frameworks are necessary to navigate the societal transformations promised by transhumanism in a way that promotes long-term sustainability and public good?

• How might transhumanist perspectives influence or challenge current models of production, consumption, and resource management? Can enhanced human capabilities or AI contribute to novel solutions for environmental challenges and the circular economy?

• The series also welcomes critical analyses of potential tensions, risks, and unintended consequences at the nexus of transhumanism and sustainability, fostering a nuanced understanding beyond utopian or dystopian extremes.

"Transhumanism and Sustainability" aims to attract contributions from scholars across diverse fields including philosophy, ethics, sociology, political science, economics, environmental studies, technology studies, and public policy. By bringing these varied perspectives into conversation, the series endeavors to explore new conceptual pathways and practical considerations for a future where human flourishing and planetary health are not mutually exclusive, but mutually reinforcing. We seek to publish thought-provoking monographs and cohesive edited collections that will shape the discourse in this vital emerging field.
